TDLA Curriculum


Session 1:Tools of Rehabilitation Leadership: Planning and Forecasting

(2 days over 3; Austin, TX)

Planning for the future is a critical leadership skill. The ability to forecast; to create a vision; to establish and implement action plans with built-in accountability, and; to utilize tools that support successful outcomes, gives an effective leader a strong advantage in building a thriving organization.

Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of Vision and Mission
  • Develop Strategic Planning and Forecasting skills
  • Utilize tools for Focus: What Matters Most
  • Apply tools for Accountability in Organizations
  • Clarify intentions and benchmark progress to goals
  • Demonstrate skills of The Practical Coach


Session 2: Personal Values in Rehabilitation Organizations

(2 days over 3; Austin, TX)

Self-awareness is an essential element of effective leadership. This session will provide a number of self-assessment tools and feedback to assist participants in creating a personal leadership development plan. Leadership and management skills will be identified and defined.

Objectives:

  • Understand the need for Self-awareness and Goal Setting
  • Define Leadership – Management Characteristics
  • Create a Self-Development Plan
  • Demonstrate knowledge of elements of The Leadership Challenge


Follow up to this session includes four one-hour telephone coaching sessions and The Leadership Challenge individual development plan to be conducted in the month of June 2010.


Session 3: Leading and Managing Change in Rehab Organizations

(3 1/2 days; Austin, TX)

Change happens at increasingly greater rates in the 21st Century. The rehabilitation industry is affected by change in all sectors of the world of work. In addition to responsiveness to change, the rehabilitation field has initiated change in its own identity and structure over time. Project Management is an essential skill for implementing change. This session will include training in Project Management as well as activities for greater understanding of the dynamics of change.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the reality of change
        Functioning in chaos, and levels of comfort with change
  •  Demonstrate understanding System Dynamics
        Challenges and Opportunities that can result from multiple perspectives
  • Develop Project Management skills and build resources to facilitate change
  •  Understand the role of projects in organizations, and how they can affect change

Session 4: Building a Rehabilitation Team

(one week; T Bar M Ranch, New Braunfels, TX)

At the core of successful rehabilitation outcomes, there is a team working to achieve results. The accomplishment of goals and objectives for clients, staff and the organization often takes multiple contributions aligned toward a common result. This week-long session will provide instruction and experiential learning to illustrate basic concepts of synergy and interdependence. It will also provide tools for effective communication and negotiation. Project teams will work together throughout this session.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
  • Read and identify critical points in book on teams (to be identified)
  • Experience the trust and role delineation necessary for high functioning teams utilizing ropes courses (Low Ropes/High Ropes)
  • Demonstrate skills for Negotiation and Conflict Resolution

Session 5: The Rehabilitation Coach

(2 days over 3; Austin, TX)

Leadership is sometimes defined as having influence with others to achieve results. Situational Leadership offers a framework for leadership behaviors to effectively influence the actions and attitudes of others.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Situational Leadership

Session 6: The Context for Rehabilitation Leadership

( 2 days over 3; Austin, TX)

The best leaders are aware of external relationships and connections to the larger community in which their organizations exist. This session is designed to turn the participants’ attention outward; to increase their understanding of the big picture in society and rehabilitation today. The last session will also include a dinner and award ceremony for presentation of certificates of completion.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Understand the current Rehabilitation Environment
  • Recognize State Political Structure and its influence on Agency Culture
  • To include activities:
    • to demonstrate interdependence
    • SWOT Analysis
    • Environmental Scanning
